A novelette. First in a series of novelettes and novels Tales from the Middle Empires.
On a world where blood feuds and interplanetary game hunts are rites of passage, the ruler's younger son joins his elder brother and a band of usurpers on a hunt. But Osbane soon learns that their ship has been around the galaxy a few times and has ideas of its own about what makes for sport. Set upon a world with a strangely sparse ecosystem, Osbane finds that life there revolves around on a fragrant fruit that beckons the hunters and the gamebeasts equally. Warned by the ship to avoid eating it, Osbane travels to the dark heart of the ship's memory banks to discover the horrors that await those who submit to their desire.
The Hunting Party Tales From The Middle Empires eBook J Patrick Sutton
I started this story feeling overwhelmed by the amount of backstory the author was presenting. There's rulers and a social structure and ships and . . . . I almost put it down to read something else. But I kept going and quickly found that everything fell into place. This is a short story set in a world that is vastly imagined. I can imagine that the author has tons and tons of information on everything related to this universe, but he displayed a great deal of skill in understand what to leave and what to present. What we have, at the heart, is the story of a sentient ship taking a hunting party to a little known planet. They think they are there for a simple hunting party, but the truth is much more complex than that.it's creepy and fascinating. I've had this story on my Kindle for at least two years now and I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I can't wait to read more of the author's work.

The Hunting Party Tales From The Middle Empires eBook J Patrick Sutton Reviews
While it is futuristic in tone, and not exactly similar in subject, Patrick Sutton's story, 'The Hunting Party,' reminds me of nothing so much as Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness.' Peopling this story are a royal hunting party, a lush, overgrown land of intoxicating vegetation, and a young man discovering heretofore undisclosed truths about the nature of the wild and the devastating effects of it on humankind. But it is really a 'wild' land, or merely a 'created' one?!? Either way, the foreshadowing, the viridian language and landscape, and the inclusion of an unsettling artificial intelligence all lead to an enticing and disturbing sort of fairytale. I enjoyed the darkness and the verbal skill of the author.
I'm rereading the Irredente series and found this unusual tale helpful in understanding Sutton's later works. Well worth it for fans of the series.
I started with the 2nd story, The Birth of Zakaria, and loved it. So, I went back to the first story, and just didn't find it as interesting. The main character of Osbane just doesn't leap out at me as an interesting character. Fortunately, Zakaria is in this, though as a fan of the 2nd story, I'm a bit depressed by how Zakaria has ended up. The fate of the other characters is interesting and not the norm, which I can appreciate an author taking risks.
Still, it is worth a read - especially if free, but definitely not my favorite.
