This is book 2 in the Crane and Anderson series (if you’ve not read the Sgt Major Crane series, I highly recommend them prior to picking up the Crane/Anderson series. You will not be disappointed!).Crane, previously with the military police, now works beside his friend and fellow police officer in the major crimes unit. A sadomasochistic killer is on the loose and the Crane/Anderson team must find him before he strikes again.
As always, Ms. Cartmell weaves a complicated mystery with plenty of twists and turns, and I had trouble putting the book down. I’m looking forward to book 3 in the series.

Well written, intelligent procedural with believable characterizations of main protagonists. Satisfying read with a lack of gore ( which I appreciate). Will definitely seek out author's other e books!
In the second book, Basic Elements, of the Crane and Anderson series by Wendy Cartmell, readers are re-introduced to the St. Major Crane and Anderson duo. These two have a new mission to catch the Choker, a man or woman killing people in an unusual way. Crane and Anderson will need to shuffle through all the evidence to find this person before another killing occurs.
After reading book, one in the series and not being familiar with the author’s writing style or these characters, I was worried that I would not care for this second installment. I was proven wrong. I found myself more interested in Crane and Anderson especially in how they went about solving this case. The killer in this one was more mysterious and hard to pinpoint, which I liked. The switching between the different characters gave the book a suspenseful element that brought the characters to life. I also liked that the twists and turns in this one proved better than the first. I enjoyed this new installment in the Crane and Anderson series and look forward to more in this series.

A very enjoyable read. Like the way Ms Cartmell allows all of the police team's involvement in solving the crime. Kept my attention throughout and, as in other books by Wendy, gave a 5 star rating because they contain mystery and suspense. Anyone who enjoys this will love this book too.
Another intriguing mystery in the series of Crane & Anderson. All characters in all of Wendy Cartmell mysteries in which Crane, Anderson, Billy, Kim, Holly and a few I may have forgotten to mention have been great reading.
Note This book was previously entitled Basic Element.
This is a Police Procedural.
Crane is now a member of a Major Crimes team lead by Anderson. The unit is tasked with finding a killer that isn't as easy to catch as they first believed.
I loved how Ms. Cartmell kept me guessing until the final reveal.
Warning There is violence as well as adult language and situations.
Book two in the newest series pits Sgt. Major Crane and DCI Anderson against a sadist serial killer who strangles both female and male victims. It may be a dark subject but the author handles it with care, building the suspense through the gripping novel. I admit I was an early fan of Ms. Carmell's fiction and now I'm adicted. She writes in a unique style, fleshing out the day-to-day life of military investigators in England in a realistic manner. She really knows her subject. Any book is a standalone story, but the whole series is fascinating.
I really enjoyed this latest novel oif Wendy Cartmell. The new team of Crane (suffering madly from his bad leg) Anderson, Holly and Ciaran is reminiscent of the first Aldershot group. The alternating persons is well done and easy to follow.
The subject matter covered in this plot is well handled and the sexual content - though shown - is not explicit as such.
Strangely for me, I didn't work out who the murderer was and this is the skill of the author who got past me with this one.
