"Skies Like These" is a book that has big "LOVE" written all over it. It is one of those cases where there isn't an epic adventure, or great drama, or captivating mystery, but rather warm, sun-basked and open-sky-filled story of kids that coming into their own. It's mellow, evenly-paced tale that shows us summer vacation of Jade ( prim and proper city girl) and Roy (a young cowboy with big dreams).

The vacation takes place in Wyoming - not your typical backdrop for middle grade lit; Tess Hilmo's writing about the state, however, made me feel like I have to take vacation there! Just the descriptions of the sky (starry nights transported me straight to the Aunt Elise's roof) or the weather ("Welcome to Wyoming! If you don't like the weather just wait 5 minutes." ;) have this power of making you feel the wind in your face or the warm sun on your skin...After reading about all those vast spaces and breathtaking mountain backdrops the word "freedom" somehow takes on a very different meaning for a usual city dweller like me.

Tess Hilmo treats her heroes (and everyone, really, because there aren't any villainous or evil-plotting people here) like dear friends. Every detail and every character written with such love and so much soul, that I had this unshakable feeling that she genuinely cared (as she was writing it ;) for everyone to end up happy. It's a small book with a cozy, intimate feeling of a family gathering. People stargazing, dreaming, treating each other with baked goods...There are some mistakes made, yet they aren't life-changing, but rather self-discovering. It's story of search for own identity with some dreaming and great friendships on the side.

I recommend this book for kids who want to learn about lesser known parts of our gorgeous country and partake in fun summer vacation that brings thoughts and dreams as oppose to non-stop excitement. As for adults, I would suggest "Skies Like This" if you want to read something that will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside; just a few hours of a relaxed reading about good people doing good things.:)

Book #5 Read in 2015
Skies Like These by Tess Hilmo (YA)

Jade goes to Wyoming to visit her Aunt Elise. She meets Roy, a neighbor boy who believes he is a relative to Butch Cassidy. Roy wants to rob a bank, steal artwork and other get-rich-quick schemes to help his parents have enough money to reopen the family business. Roy figures he should be able to do so, as any good cowboy would. Jade has to try to help him be realistic and reasonable. This was a good, quick read. Jade and Roy are both intelligent and interesting characters. Secondary characters are interesting as well and the plot will engage reluctant readers. I borrowed this book from our town library.

"Sagebrush dotted out across the fields like silver freckles on a beige landscape. Gauzy clouds layered the sky above in varying shades of pink. And as always, the Tetons stood watch over their valley. Jade looked up at those raspberry-swirled clouds and thought about Tilly in her pink house--how she would love the sky at that moment."

Just one of my favorite descriptive passages from Tess Hilmo's latest book. And the skies aren't the only thing I loved! While the setting is beautiful, the characters truly make this story fantastic, and there was wonderful character development for all three main characters, Roy, Jade, and Elise.

While 12 year old Jade isn't thrilled to spend a part of her summer vacation in Wyoming with her colorful aunt Elise, she soon makes friends with the neighbor boy, Roy, who is obsessed with Butch Cassidy. Roy teaches Jade about the life of a cowboy and drags her into his summer plot to get revenge on the man who he feels is responsible for his father's hardware store's closing. In the process, both he and Jade learn about their own family histories.

At the conclusion of the story, I have my own ideas of how the story should continue, because the characters are believable enough to make me care about them. In the sequel in my head, Jade comes back to Wellington every summer, Roy teaches her to ride horses, and Elise eventually learns how to cook. I would also like to know more about Jade's family in Philadelphia.

Written for the middle grade audience, this story is sweet and beautifully written, with enough plot surprises to keep one guessing. The imagery and language style are well crafted and wonderful. It's easy enough for a young person to understand, but interesting and compelling enough for adults to find it a wonderful book, too. In a time when so many books geared for young people are all about the silly pranks and girly crushes of junior high, this book is witty and funny without compromising. I'm going to recommend it to my 11 year old son, my 13 year old daughter, and my adult friends.
