Everdark is the second in the series and there were times when I want a little more intelligence from the main character. However, since this is brain candy, yum yum, I am willing to let the silly things that don't quite add up go.This really was brain candy. Sex, kicking ass, and a little bit of danger. Then there is the mind control and awesome powers. I want to jump roof tops that just sounds fun. This all adds up to a fun read that shut off the brain for a while.
This book doesn't have as much of a conclusion as the first in the series did but I felt less ravenous for the third book than I had after I finished reading the first book.
While I sometimes wanted to hit Riley for her stupidity and lack of trust. "With trust there is no love" yet she claims to love so many people and then just blatantly ignore them. That gets old. I do like how spunky she is and how she wants to maintain her independence even when it probably isn't in her best interest. It can be hard to admit we need others. Riley still hasn't realized she might need a little help or might want to share the burdens with someone else sometimes and that is what I'm waiting for her to realize. I hope the author doesn't let me down but that is one change I really want to see in Riley before the series ends.
Here's to a great brain candy novel. I shall not be shy about the joy I have gotten from this series. It isn't for everyone but when I'm reading it I'm absorbed and loving it.

Everdark The Dark Ink Chronicles Elle Jasper Books Reviews
I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Afterlight, so I was beyond excited to get my hands this book. The chemistry between Riley and Eli in book one was scorching, and I was hoping that passion would spill over into this book. In a way I did get my wish, since Riley was bitten by strigoi her blood is not as addictive as it was before; therefore Eli could be more comfortable around her. However, I did not feel that spark like I did in book one. They are all over each other in the first couple of chapters, but it gets a little repetitive and I did not feel the same level of excitement for them as I did in Afterlight. I did, however, like watching Riley's brother, Seth, relationship with one of the Dupres get hinted at. I think there is a little something going on there and I am hoping we will get to explore that little side plot further in the future.
As for the action, in the beginning there was quite a bit going on, so the story moved along well. About halfway through though, the book starts to lose steam. Riley, Eli and crew are in pursuit of the villain but nothing actually happens for a good hundred pages and I started to lose interest. I was also getting a little confused with Riley's feelings towards Eli. Victorian keeps entering her mind, messing with her body and feelings and she is not always so opposed to him being there. It was just creepy how Victorian could control some of her actions and get her very excited. I was not a fan, and I am quite surprised Riley is not putting up more of a fight over this invasion. She does vocally say she is not happy with the situation, but I am wondering if this is going to be more of an issue in book three. Plus, poor Eli, he can't fight someone when that someone is in Riley's mind. I hope this is going to get cleared up in the next book and Riley will be kicking Victorian to the curb.
As for the ending all I can say is WOW! The jam packed, action filled, suspenseful ending made some of the slower pace from before worth it. There was a huge cliffhanger that will leave you begging for the next book in the series. Luckily, Elle was nice enough to give us a little teaser for the book three and I think that will tide me over until it releases.
Overall, this was a solid sequel, but one I did not like it as much as the first book. The slow pace really just bummed me out and I am hoping that the next book will pick the action back up again. That being said, I still think it is worth reading and getting to see where Riley's crazy life has taken her now.
Book 2 is not a stand alone novel. In order to fully understand the goings-on in Everdark, it's imperative that you read Book 1, Afterlight, first.
After being attacked and bitten by both Victorian and Valerian Arcos, Riley is taken to Da Island, off of the coast of Savannah, GA. The cast of characters on the island include "a handful of centuries old vampires, Gullah conjurers, and adolescent boys with vampiric tendencies, along with Zetty, the Tibetan" (E. Jasper, 2011, pg. 48). With the strigoi blood of two very powerful vampires swimming around inside of her, the island get away is to protect the humans around her normal, day-to-day operations, and help her detox. Riley will now always have vampiric tendencies, as do Seth and his friends that were saved from completely transforming into strigoi.
Believing that at least one brother, Valerian, is dead and the other, Victorian, has fled, Riley and the gang hope to be able to get back to normal - well, as normal as their lives can be. But Victorian isn't about to leave Riley alone. He begins invading her dreams, letting her know that one day he will come for her. One day, Riley will belong to him. To top it all off, shortly after Victorian invades her mind, the day terrors begin possessing her.
Riley gets transported from her body and mind into the mind of a killer. A vampire that assumes control over her and forces her to watch him stalk, seduce, then brutally murder his prey. A vampire that she doesn't recognize. A vampire that is in Charleston wreaking havoc on the general population. A vampire that she vows to call out and defeat. Until everyone figures out who this stranger actually is......
Riley is a very hard headed girl. Her stubbornness is actually tiring at times. She doesn't tell anyone about Victorian whispering into her mind until it's happened several times. She doesn't tell anyone about the possession of her mind by the murderous vampire. While she has powerful tendencies and is extremely strong, she is still mostly mortal. A fact that, for some reason, she seems to forget. She's not battling the normal, everyday scum of the streets - she's battling newlings and extremely powerful vampires that could make a snack of her in short order. And several attempt to do just that.
Other than that, I really feel that this installment of The Dark Ink Chronicles is much better than Book 1. The Twilight references don't bother me nearly as much - maybe it's because I just didn't notice them. The steamy sex scenes are prevalent but have some emotional substance. There is definitely love between Riley and Eli, not just lust and physical attraction. The plot and story lines flow along at an even clip and make it hard to put the book down.
There was definitely more action in this book, especially when Riley and her entourage have to join the inner circle of a newling vs human fight club - this is how newbies are recruiting the strongest mortals to the vampire clan. Eli, as protective as he is, has a very difficult time adjusting to Riley's role in this section of the book. When the end comes and it's finally time to shake things down and take care of business, Valerian kidnaps Nyx, Riley's best friend. In order to get her back safely, Riley must voluntarily come to him in exchange for the release of Nyx. Shortly thereafter, a different knight-in-shining-armor appears....changing Riley's course of action.....and now we have a huge cliffhanger ending.
