I didn't know the musician author before purchasing the book, but it was recommended to me. I enjoyed it thoroughly and found the book interesting and funny. I am now a fan of Eels!Although the author suffered many personal losses he keeps a sense of humor that is commendable. I think this is an example of someone overcoming difficult circumstances, and not falling in despair or blaming others for his bad luck.
I like the writing style of the book. I recommend it.

Things the Grandchildren Should Know Mark Oliver Everett 9780316027878 Books Reviews
Great read. As another one of the gen-X'ers growing up in Northern VA/DC suburban area, this was an especially cool story, but regardless of stomping ground, just sheer awesome.
Sure, the title to this review might sound like hyperbole, but I honestly cannot think of a book I enjoyed as much as this one for the past several years.
A somewhat rambly memoir, it represents a chronological description of Mark Everett's very interesting life. From his childhood, and his relationship with his family (including his detached father, genius physicist Hugh Everett) through to his touring life and inspiration for his band, the Eels, this book represents a fascinating insight into E's experiences. His self-reflection is thought-provoking and allows us just a small peek into what it's like inside his world.
As a long-time Eels fan I found this book particularly engaging due to Everett's discussion of inspiration for song-writing and arrangement. As I read through the chapters, I could remember hearing songs for the first time, or seeing new arrangements at the shows. This gave the book an added dimension which I honestly hadn't expected.
This is a very honest, well-written book that I think will appeal to music fans and others alike.
As a big fan of Eels, I was thrilled to find and read this. The stories about his turbulent family life and his early days as a starving musician are fascinating. However, once he "makes it," the book gets a little boring. Reading about A & R people and record company politics are not very interesting when juxtaposed with E's struggles as a young man. I read Louis Armstrong's autobiography about his life in New Orleans, now I know why the book ends before he became a worldwide sensation. Fame and fortune aren't nearly as interesting as the struggle that gets you there.
I've been an Eels fan since Beautiful Freak came out, and have since purchased the catalogue as the records came out. I wouldn't necessarily consider myself a 'superfan', but I definitely have an appreciation for the fact that each record is varied, is obviously sincere, and carries with it a heavy dose of integrity (something that is more than rare in music these days).
When I found out that Mark Everett had written a book, I was intrigued to say the least. With such scattered & quirky musical ambitions, I was sure that he would have some interesting things to say. I underestimated how interesting!! I'm sure there had to be a certain amount of disconnect inherent in the writing of this book, as it would be more than difficult to explore the events throughout his life without it. That said, I definitely appreciate the witty sense of humour and sarcasm throughout the book, a sort of tongue-in-cheek walk through a man's life as he explores all of the ups & downs & absurdities that life has to offer.
I walked into this book an Eels fan. I walked out with a deep appreciation of the author and all that he has had to endure to bring us something real, both in his personal life and as a musician.
If you're into Eels at all, you'll be glad you picked up the book.
Mark Oliver Everett (EELS) delivers one of the most honest autobiographies as he describes the ups and downs of his own personal life as a shy boy and as a struggling musician. Nothing is glorified and everything is told with complete integrity. I recommend this book for any struggling artists out there as well as for fans of his music.
Mark Olvier Everett's biography was filled with personal tragedy from beginning to end. He felt he was constantly surrounded by death and given the early deaths of his Father, Sister and Mother he was right. Somehow through it all he retains an optimistic outlook using his passion for music as a force that brings him up from times of desperation. Written in a plain straightforward manner he also tells the story of his rise to music fame but without giving in to the usual downfall that comes with it. He retains an awareness of who he is, what his flaws are and what truly makes him whole when he is at the bottom or top. This is a great read with plenty of moments of humor, insight, inspiration, sadness and nostalgia for us in the X-generation.
I enjoyed every bit of this book. Well I got the audio book version, but still loved every minute of it. If you haven't listened to the Eels or any of Mark Oliver Everett's music then you are denying yourself a truly wonderful life experience! His songs span the musical spectrum and it's all well worth the trip. This book give you a personal tour through the one-of-a-kind life that made Mr. E the man he is. Which is a true musical genius. Buy the book. Buy the albums. Buy tickets to his shows if he comes to your town!
